[go to the bottom of this post to get the full book! ] We call them The Silkies. The Tener Silkies, that is, because they are definitely part of the family. They are an ancient breed of chickens of Asian descent, first introduced in Europe by the Dutch as: the wondrous cross-breed between a rabbit and a chicken! It turns out that this is quite a believable description because they are absolutely fuzzy and soft, quite like a bunny. Note: The original version of this post had the phrasing "bunny rabbit" but Mara pointed out that "rabbit" is redundant because all bunnies are rabbits. Elena pointed out that "bunny rabbit" is more artistic. I will just have to write this again, in case you didn't realize how extremely huggable they are. Fuzzy and soft, they feel all over like a silky-soft fur - the poofy head, the poofy tail, chest and back and wings are all soft fuzziness. I'd say they're even softer than you would imagine from my paltry descrip...
Our friend Emily writes dontmissdairy.com , a blog with recipes that are adapted for dairy-free diets. Even though we don't really avoid dairy ourselves, one recipe caught our eye last week and we decided to make it a Sunday brunch. It makes great use of the quinoa that we've been keeping in the pantry. Here's the recipe: http://dontmissdairy.com/2014/05/27/simple-quinoa-egg-bake . We used squash and carrots for the veggies, very finely chopped, and some delightful organic asparagus spears for decoration that ended up also delicious. Here is the photo log from making it, don't miss Mara's action stance before the very first bite!
I'm pretty sure they're plotting an escape. There have been tell-tale signs for quite a while, I'm just finally putting them together. For instance, over the past month both older kids have been quietly playing in a room by themselves for looooong periods of time. When you open the door they look annoyed at the interruption, and they won't tell you what the play was about. We say: Fine, keep your secrets. I have to work anyway. But we pick up whispers about other worlds as the door is gently closing... Then, more pieces of the puzzle fall in place. Like their daily training to climb a quasi-vertical rope on a flipped-up bed mattress . They're suspiciously proficient at it by now, they've been doing it over, and over, and over for the entire past month. It all started as fun entertainment one night, around when the shelter-in-place was declared. We pushed the mattress and boxes against the wall as we were moving the bed in the room, and thought we'd give them...
